OLYMPIC TRUCE EXHIBITION OPENING

While on an official visit to China, Culture Minister Mr. Michalis Liapis opened the exhibition of the International Olympic Truce Centre at the Greek House in Beijing.
In the presence of former President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, and members of the IOC and the HOC, Mr. Liapis stated that "the Olympic Truce lies at the core of the Olympic Ideal which has all people, even the greatest of enemies, setting aside their differences, at least for 16 days every four years, in order to serve the notion of fair play", said Mr. Liapis.
The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre were founded as new tools of peace to promote this aim. They are two non-governmental organizations headed by distinguished personalities from all over the world. Their roots are in Olympia, while they are domiciled in Lausanne together with the International Olympic Committee.

As Mr. Liapis stated in his address, the exhibition comprises artworks by Greek and Chinese painters with subjects inspired by peace, truce and sport.
"The aim is to demonstrate the course from Greece, cradle of the Olympic Games and organizer of the 2004 Games in Athens, to China and the Olympics of 2008. Two ancient civilizations converse about sport, truce and peace through the works of contemporary painters and show how some universal values are perceived", the minister pointed out.
"Our primary aim is to promote the ideals of peace and truce and to see that they are observed in practice. A world characterized by balance, stability and acceptance of the other's special identity need not remain a dream; it can become a reality. Let us all work towards this", concluded Mr. Liapis.

"In December 1999, as the twentieth century drew to an end and while the planet was still devastated by wars and civil strife, the International Olympic Committee and the Greek Government pledged to revive the Olympic Truce and establish Peace", noted the Greek Minister.
The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre were founded as new tools of peace to promote this aim. They are two non-governmental organizations headed by distinguished personalities from all over the world. Their roots are in Olympia, the heart and the homeland of the Olympic Ideals, while they are domiciled in Lausanne together with the International Olympic Committee, as Mr. Liapis said.
"The administrative services of the International Olympic Truce Centre are in Athens. Both institutions support the mission of the Olympic Movement, promoting peaceful coexistence around the world through networks of cooperation with organizations within the Olympic family, other national and international organizations and the citizens' society", pointed out Mr. Liapis.
As he explained, "the work of the two bodies is founded upon two pillars which reflect their strategic aims of promoting a culture of peace and cooperation through sporting and cultural events and building the Truce during the Olympic Games."
"To this end, I see this exhibition we are opening as part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Beijing and the Cultural Year of Greece in China as of particular significance", he added.
The exhibition comprises artworks by Greek and Chinese painters with subjects drawn from peace, truce and sport. The aim is to demonstrate the course from Greece, cradle of the Olympic Games and organizer of the 2004 Games in Athens, to China and the Olympics of 2008.
"Our principal objective is to promote the ideals of peace and truce and to see that they are observed in practice. A world characterized by balance, stability and acceptance of the other's special identity need not remain a dream; it can become a reality. Let us all work towards this", concluded the Minister of Culture.
Earlier the same day the Minister attended the opening performance of Dimitris Papaioannou's production of Medea at the Arts Centre of Beijing.
"The aquatic Medea was an astounding performance, a contemporary way of presenting an ancient Greek tragedy. The inventiveness in relating this myth, the harmony of the dance and the dancers made for a truly unique show. Dimitris Papaioannou has done an excellent job, as it is always the case with his projects which include the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympic Games of Athens", said Mr. Liapis.
