From 19-23 October, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke, is in New York, where Monday 19 October was in effect a 'sports day' at the UN General Assembly, with three resolutions on sport adopted. In October 2007, the 62nd Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, chaired by Srgjan Kerim, adopted the Olympic Truce Resolution for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Through this resolution, the UN invites its member States to observe and promote peace during Games-times in order to protect the interests of athletes and sport in general, and to contribute, through sport, to the search for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to the world's conflicts.

Today, on the 3 rd of November 2003 , the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the draft UN Resolution entitled "Building a Peaceful and better world through Sport and the Olympic ideals" which was submitted by Greece and co-sponsored by 190 out of 191 UN member-states, a number unprecedented in UN history. (The only exception was Iraq , which is not represented in the current Session of the General Assembly.)

On Monday 8 July 2002, during his visit to the island of Samos, Greece, to attend an international Symposium, former United States president William J. Clinton signed onto the "Statement of World Personalities, in their Individual Capacities, in Support for the Olympic Truce." His signature followed that of former South African President Nelson Mandela on June 19, 2002, and joins those of over 130 world personalities from the worlds of politics, religion, and culture. As far back as September 2000, President Clinton had sent a letter to Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos expressing his support to the plea for the respect of the Olympic Truce during the Syndey 2000 Olympic Games.
