About

Establishment

The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre were established in July 2000 as a joint initiative of Greece and the International Olympic Committee, turning the commitment of the Olympic Movement to promote its peaceful principles into concrete action. The initiative first took form in 1998, with a proposal from the Greek Government to the members of the International Olympic Committee for the institutional revival of Olympic Truce in the new millennium. In a historic December 1999 decision, the International Olympic Committee announced the establishment of the International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce, in cooperation with Greece. The commitment to the Olympic Truce gained further impetus with the proposal from the candidate city of Athens that the 2004 Olympic Games would ignite the meaning of the Olympic Truce and promote its values around the world through the 2004 Olympic Torch Relay.

Organisation

The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre are included within the framework of the Olympic Movement. They are administered by a Board of Directors consisting of distinguished individuals from all over the world. The Board Chair is Dr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee. Vice Chairs are George A. Papandreou, Prime Minister of Greece and Fanny Palli-Petralia, former Minister of Tourism and former Minister of Employment and Social Protection in Greece. Dr. Constantinos Filis is the Director of the International Olympic Truce Centre.

Headquarters

The symbolic seat of both the Foundation and the Centre is Olympia, the birthplace of Olympism and the Olympic Games. The legal and statutory seat of the Foundation, as well as the Centre's liaison office, is Lausanne, where the International Olympic Committee is based. Athens, home of the first modern Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896, and host city of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, houses the Centres administrative headquarters.

Observing the Olympic Truce calls for an awakening of consciousness, the motivation of leaders to act, mobilization to promote the Olympic ideal and the education of youth in conformity with the principles of Olympism.

Four Pillars

The work of the International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre is based on four fundamental pillars, each reflecting a distinct strategy. Each pillar is focused on actions and initiatives to lead to global awareness and support, the observance of the Olympic Truce, and to a steady shaping of a Culture of Peace. In the true spirit of Olympism, these are open strategies, involving all people of the world.

1. Communication

The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre develop communication campaigns, communicating the mission and their achievements, whilst promoting the principles of Olympism. To this end, the Foundation and the Centre, in cooperation with International Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees and Organizing Committees of the Olympic Games, take the message of the Olympic Truce to the Olympic Games, carry the spirit of friendship and reconciliation in the Olympic Torch Relay, and contribute to the daily universal appreciation of the spirit and the principles of the Olympic Movement.

2. Dialogue and discussion

The stimulation of dialogue and discussion, both amongst specialists and the general public, has always been central to the efforts of the Foundation and the Truce Centre. Advances in technology have allowed the creation of The Olympic Truce Forum, an online forum with easy access in every corner of the globe, stimulating dialogue and discussion at the broadest possible level. All humanity is invited to pledge their support for truce and to participate in the Olympic Truce Forum.

3. Education

The International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre develop educational programs that seek to cultivate a Culture of Peace through sport and the Olympic Ideal, encouraging the development of grass roots programs and initiatives revolving around Olympic Truce, in support of the fundamental educational mission of Olympism. The achievements of this effort are substantial in developing a "knowledge bank" on the Olympic Truce and in developing educational and research programs in cooperation with academic institutions worldwide. The newly established Olympic Truce Educational Program is aimed at children of school-going age. Through a combination of lectures and workshops, online activities, field trips and publications, the values of Olympism and the Olympic Truce are communicated to future generations. Broader social support is cultivated through "Truce Action Kits" that educate and involve the general public in the objectives, the strategies and the projects of the International Olympic Truce Centre.

4. Truce Building

Truce building activities provide support and inspiration, through sport and the Olympic Ideal, in cooperation with relevant national and international organizations, in areas facing armed conflict. Together with partners, the International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre provide humanitarian support to regions in conflict. They gather the support of international and national organizations for the observance of the Olympic Truce. They organize sport and symbolic Olympic Truce events in areas of tension. They organize sporting events, youth camps and round table discussions focused on sport and the Olympic Ideal and the development of a Culture of Peace.
