Statement of the Director of the International Olympic Truce Centre, Dr. Constantinos Filis, on the adoption by consensus of the Olympic Truce Resolution for PyeongChang 2018

Yesterday was a historic day for the international recognition of the Olympic Truce and acknowledgement of the need for peace and brotherhood among peoples during the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, in this case those in PyeongChang.

At United Nations headquarters, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal,” on the need for suspension or cessation of armed conflicts during the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in the Republic of Korea (9-25 February and 9-18 March). The new and extremely important element in this Resolution concerns the inclusion of the call “to ensure the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other accredited persons taking part [...] and to contribute through other appropriate measures to the safe organization of the Games.”

On this I would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games, the government of the Republic of Korea, and the International Olympic committee and its president, Thomas Bach, and I would like to thank Greece’s Permanent Mission to the UN for their tireless efforts toward the adoption by consensus of the resolution in question. In the midst of a critical state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula, where tensions remain high, the inclusion of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea among the supporters of the Resolution sends an encouraging message, underscoring the pivotal role of sport and, in particular, the Olympic Values in shaping more favourable conditions as a step towards stability and peace.
